SCRUM is a collective of theatre makers, dedicated to making theatre in more sustainable ways for the future. Founded out of a moment of crisis in the UK theatre industry and dwindling arts funding, we tour excellent, accessible to areas underfunded for theatre, along with educational resources.

Story

In the UK, every child needs to pass a paper on Shakespeare to get their English GCSE. This means you have to access his plays before you can access further study and work opportunities.

The problem is that Shakespeare never wanted his plays to be READ. So unless you experience an actor performing his words, they’ll never make complete sense.

Years of cuts to arts funding has meant more and more schools don’t have access to live theatre. And while state schools have been focusing less on arts education, private schools have been investing more into it. (Source: International Journal of Cultural Policy)

Our new resource will attempt to close the gap. We want to cater to multiple learning styles, as well as address the real needs of teachers on the ground, which is why we've been running a nationwide survey of English and Drama teachers. Drawing on this data, the pack will include vibrant text breakdowns, audio guides, videos, and much more.

SCRUM is all about creating excellent and accessible theatre and arts education programmes, while providing artists with the right time, space and equitable pay to create truly collaborative, high-quality work. This means all artists are paid the same rate, higher than union minimums and the London Living Wage.
