Story

South Derbyshire Music Centre urgently needs to raise at least £5500 - and we need your help please!

After the unexpected closure of our school base of 50 years (the former William Allitt School), our weekly rehearsals are now held at The Pingle Academy, Swadlincote. Everyone has been so welcoming there, but sadly there's no storage space for instruments and music.

A new container unit will soon be delivered to help solve this problem, but this large cost was unforeseen.

Philip King (Head of SDMC) says: Over the years, large numbers of children and young people have taken part in our various bands and choirs, and countless people have enjoyed hearing their music at concerts. We're appealing to EVERYONE to help us by giving as generously as possible.

Former SDYB player Elizabeth King is running the Manchester Marathon in April and any sponsorship which she attracts will also go towards this appeal.

Cantabile Choir, closely associated with the Music Centre, will be working hard too with helping to meet this unexpected large expense.

Philip believes that many in the South Derbyshire community and beyond will want to show their appreciation of the enjoyment which the choirs and bands have given over 50+ years.

After an unexpected closure of our school base of 50 years, South Derbyshire Music Centre faces some unprecedented financial outlay: over £5500 so far! Our Just Giving page will hopefully help us to recoup some of these costs, so that we can continue to provide children and young people of all abilities with opportunities to experience the enjoyment of making music together. Players and singers rehearse each week in a progressive range of choirs and bands under the direction of a dedicated team of qualified and inspirational music leaders. A team of volunteer parent- helpers gives invaluable support on a weekly basis, both musically and pastorally, throughout all ensembles. All our ensembles take part in public performances throughout the year. Our Senior Wind Band has seven players in the award-winning Derbyshire City & County Youth Wind Band. The Youth Choir works closely with the adult Cantabile Choir, also based in the Music Centre. We want every young person to be able to experience music-making, whatever their background. Trustees work to keep Centre fees as low as possible, and also ensure that no child is excluded due to financial hardship. Currently we have no storage facilities for instruments and music, and this has necessitated buying a new container unit: an unexpected large expense. Consequently we urgently need to raise £5500. Any support which you can give our charity will be enormously appreciated.
