Stricklandgate House are raising funds to help preserve the past, and serve the present

Stricklandgate House Trust is fundraising for a major redevelopment project that will secure its future for the community for generations to come. The project will secure the Georgian building and create a vibrant Community Hub and Community Lounge.

Closes 30/06/2026

Stricklandgate House is the centre for the local charity and voluntary sector in Kendal. We provide accommodation and support. Our project will secure our building and services into the future and will create a community hub and community lounge.

Story

Stricklandgate House (SGH) has a fascinating and varied history. But, for the last 33 years it has served our communities as Centre for the Charity and Voluntary Sector, providing a welcoming, discreet haven for those seeking services and support. 18 charities currently make SGH their home, 50 more use our counselling and meeting rooms and over 13,000 people access services and support each year.

“I’ve known Stricklandgate House since its creation as a home for so many charities and services and adds great value to the voluntary sector in the area.”

Andy Beeforth OBE Chief Executive of Cumbria Community Foundation

However after 250 years SGH is now desperately in need of some TLC and serious investment to allow it to continue to support the communities of South Lakes are for generations to come.

We have applied to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a grant of around £5 million. If successful:

+ We will conserve and renovate the Georgian Town House so it can continue to support our local charitable and voluntary organisations.

+We will also redevelop the modern extension into a Community Hub with a Community Lounge, a warm and welcoming place for all our communities.

+We will improve accessibility throughout so everyone can access support.

+ We will use modern technology to move towards net zero and help to keep our costs affordable for building users.

We want to ensure that SGH can continue to be a beautiful building of heritage that is used for social purpose and community benefit

“Over the years I've used Stricklandgate house for meetings with various groups, from Rape counselling, and Barnardos therapy for my children,….

Most recently, over the last couple of years, I have attended meetings with the Poverty Truth Commission… Stricklandgate house has always felt like a safe space to be. I have and will continue to recommend Stricklandgate house”

Sarah, South Lakeland Poverty Truth Community Commissioner

However, we need to raise £820,000 to match any grant provided by the Heritage Fund. So far we have raised £640,00 and are confident that we can raise the rest. But, we need your help.

Stricklandgate House is more than just a building for One Vision—it's a vital foundation for delivering life-changing support in Kendal and beyond.

I love this building. I’d be heartbroken if Stricklandgate House went. Janine, CEO of One Vision Uniformed Services
