Investing in the future

Organised by SEPIA

This project focuses on helping students beyond their basic education. Our aim is to offer small bursaries which help them access further training and ultimately a job. Currently we are looking to assist those who wish to train as a teacher or nurse.

SEPIA is a small family run not for profit charity set up by Michael Clarke (a secondary school teacher) with support from Helen Clarke (a university lecturer) and Aaron, their son. The main purpose of the association is to support educational projects in Africa. Activities include: •Organisation of fund raising events to support educational projects incorporating pupil, staff and school bursaries within African schools. •Collection of donations to support educational projects incorporating pupil, staff and school bursaries within African schools. •Establishment of links to support educational projects within Africa Our main focus at the moment is in Ghana where we are working with several schools in Asafo, Bomponso, Kute Buem and New Tafo in the eastern region.

Story

SEPiA has been working with Ghanaian schools for nearly 20 years and in that time we have seen a lot of children gain, at least, a basic education. Numbers attending primary schools has vastly increased and the percentage completing Junior High is also on the rise. However, many children still end up working on small home farms or as street sellers. Access to further education and training is costly and for many in the rural areas beyond reach. A few years ago we were approached by a student, in one of the schools we work with, who told us he really wanted to train as a teacher so he could also help children. The young man explained how he would take on jobs to save up for the fees and asked if we could offer any help if things got tough. We did help at times and he kept us up to date with his progress. Those few years have now passed and we are pleased to say that Seth, the young man in question, is a fully qualified teacher and not only provides children with a good education but also offers support to those wishing to further their careers. Since then we have also offered bursaries to to two young women who are both now in nursing and one other young man who is also a teacher. We feel that this completes the circle for us and these people who we first came across in the primary school are now helping the next generation and providing vital services to help their communities. So this is why we have launched our ‘Investing in the future’ campaign so that we can continue to offer these type of bursaries.
