Story
We urgently need help to repair the chancel roof structure and to reinstate the plaster vaulted ceiling.
During the two winter storms of 2024, a section of the nave and chancel roof was damaged by fallen trees, the work on this has been carried out under church insurance, however on closer inspection of the chancel roof and barrelled ceiling, the plain lath and plaster ceiling is in particularly bad condition. There are widespread areas of delamination and beetle attack to the laths, which pose somewhat of a health & safety risk to the users below.
Due to the safety issue the chancel area is now not able to be used by our worship/music group on a Sunday morning, and they have now been moved to a corner of the South aisle.
The expected cost of around £80,000 is however a very large and unexpected expense which the church family have to face.
After our Gift Day and the fundraising concert we have raised £78,500. We'd be grateful for your help with the remaining total. Thank you.
History of the Church
St George's Church is in the Diocese of Bath and Wells and part of Sedgemoor Deanery. It is located in Wembdon, a semi-rural area of Bridgwater and situated on Wembdon Common. The church is a Grade II listed building.
St George's Church was founded in the 13th century in the village of Wembdon. The current building dates from the 14th and 15th century but was largely rebuilt in 1868 after a fire with only the Tower and most of the Chancel remaining. Nave and aisles were rebuilt reusing some medieval fabric, in the decorated style. Interiors are Victorian in character, including pitch pine pews to nave and aisles. There are simple timber roofs to nave and aisles, with a plastered and coffered ceiling to chancel.
What is St George's used for each week?
Today St George's Church is well used for Sunday worship, funerals (open churchyard), weddings, baptisms and services for Wembdon St George’s Church of England Primary School. The average attendance on a Sunday is 115 adults together with 30 children attending Sonseekers, (Sunday school groups from crèche to age 14). After church, coffee is served in the Parish Centre opposite.
Church run weekday activities include a Toddler Group, Coffee shop open 3 mornings a week, Home Groups, Monthly Teatime for senior citizens, Fortnightly Prayer meeting, occasional Men’s and Ladies Breakfasts with a speaker and many more church-run activities.
Perhaps you or your family have a link with the church through a christening, wedding or funeral? We'd be grateful for your support in the repair to help us be able to offer these things to those in the parish for years to come.
