Staying physically fit is absolutely crucial for people with learning disabilities, as they are at increased risk of developing chronic health conditions. As such, students at Share Community will be using their four Health and Wellbeing sessions during April to improve their fitness levels, while also raising funds to help us to continue providing our vital services.
The students in the group will be working together to cover 26.2 miles in a 'get fit marathon', and will be logging their progress as they go. There will be a different activity during each session, introducing our students to new forms of exercise that they will hopefully want to continue with, even after the 'marathon' is complete.
Share is a south-west London charity that provides programmes and activities to adults with learning disabilities and autism to support them to live happier, healthier and more independent lives, and keeping our students active is a key part of our work.
Students in Share's Health and Wellbeing programme will be taking part in various activities during each one of their Thursday sessions, playing basketball and goalball, and joining in fitness and circuit training sessions, with the goal of covering 26.2 miles as a group.
Each session will start with the students learning about a famous Paralympian and their healthy lifestyle choices; how they train, their diet and their fitness levels, before embarking on their own fitness challenge. During each activity, the students will use pedometers to track their steps and will chart their progress over each of the sessions, with the aim of smashing their target - and even maybe completing more than one marathon in total!
Please make a donation to show your support for their amazing efforts and help us continue to provide innovative sessions like these.
After completing all four sessions, the students have totally smashed their target and completed four marathons in total. Well done team. What an amazing result!
We can’t do this alone. Your donation will make a big difference and will help fund Share's work supporting people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs to lead happier, healthier and more independent lives.
