Care for Girls - help a girl to start a small business

Campaign by Shines Children

We are raising £100 each to give young rape victims in Makudui village a chance to start a small business and earn enough to buy a meal every day for themselves and their babies.

Shines Children (Uganda) UK Supporters supports work in Masindi and Mbale, Uganda, to relieve child poverty. We increase access to clean water, education and healthcare, vocational skills, and community initiatives such as village saving and lending schemes, health information and HIV prevention.

Story

We are raising £100 each to give young rape victims in Makudui village a chance to start a small business and earn enough to buy a meal every day for themselves and their babies.

Each of these girls has a similar story, they were raped or became pregnant at a very young age due to desperation to get food, often as young as 11 or 12. Unfortunately as they have not had a dowry paid, these girls have been outcast from their families and forced to give birth and raise their babies alone. Our campaign, "Care for Girls" is giving these girls and their babies a second chance at life by providing small grants and training to allow the girls to start a small business and earn a small income safely.

It is shameful to be pregnant without a dowry being paid in Makudui, Uganda. Girls in this position are often advised to find their attacker if they were raped and beg him to support them. If this does not work, or if they do not know their attacker, they must find their own shelter and food, and they must give birth and raise their baby alone.

It doesn't have to be like this, for even £50 a girl can sell charcoal, for £100 she can start a food stall, or learn a skill such as hair dressing. If ten people give £10 each, another young girl that has lost everything after being raped can have a chance to make a living without begging her attacker to support her.

Shines Children (Uganda) UK Supporters raises funds to support health, education and poverty alleviation in Uganda. We are a small charity run entirely by volunteers and all proceeds go directly to support Ugandans. Until now we have concentrated our work in Masindi District, but with this campaign we are extending our support into a new region in Uganda, where there is no other support and no other hope for girls in this position.
