SHOCC is the official charity of St Mary's University, Twickenham, and celebrated its 50th birthday in 2021. It was originally known as SHOC and concentrated on overseas projects. Since becoming a UK-registered charity in 2008, it has also helped local projects. Since 2008, SHOCC has raised nearly £1,000,000 for more than 40 projects.
On May 25th, 2024, the university chess club will hold a competition between staff and students for the SHOCC Cup, an initiative of its President, Chris Bryde. We are hoping to raise sufficient funds to start chess clubs at our project schools in Tanzania. These include St Marie Eugenia Secondary Girls' School near Moshi, Kisaki Girls' Secondary at Singida, and St Jude's Primary Academy at Mto Wa Mbu.
With your help, we can raise the £900 we need to provide each school with 10 chess sets. As chess develops in our Tanzania schools, we hope to link the St Mary's University chess club with the schools and, perhaps, arrange for members to visit and encourage the game.
This is not SHOCC's first chess venture. We provided funds in 2017 to develop the game at Outspan School, Kampala. Today chess is thriving at the school and regularly enters a team in the national championships.
All donations are sent directly to our projects and we make no deductions for salaries, rent, or other costs except charges for our Jusat Giving site and for transferring the funds to our projects.
