Pitru Paksha, observed this year from 17th September to 2nd October 2024, is a sacred period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honouring ancestors and departed loved ones. During these 16 days, families pay homage through rituals, offerings, and prayers, expressing gratitude and seeking blessings.
A key part of the tradition is offering food and charity to those in need, symbolizing a way of giving back to society in the memory of departed souls. This act of compassion reflects the belief that by serving others, we honour the spirit of our ancestors and ensure peace for them in the afterlife. The ritual of offering food, known as Shradh or Tarpan, is central to this observance, as it not only nourishes the departed souls but also reminds us of the impermanence of life and the importance of kindness.
At Akshaya Patra, we provide nutritious meals to 2.2 million children every day across schools in India and the UK. For many of these children, the meals we serve are a primary motivation for attending school. We call this initiative Food for Education.
By ensuring that children have access to healthy food, we not only fight hunger but also encourage them to learn, grow, and thrive. Your contribution can help feed these eager young minds and empower them to excel in their education.
