Story
Since 2015 Self Help UK in partnership with Macmillan have supported people in Nottinghamshire living with a cancer diagnosis, or still living with the emotional or physical after effects of cancer. We also support family and friends coming to terms with someone else’s diagnosis and the impact on their lives.
Our service supports anyone over 18 affected by cancer, providing support for those with a diagnosis and for those who care about them. Our team of Self Help Macmillan specialists and volunteers can provide both practical and emotional support, helping people come to terms with their diagnosis and get the best out of life. We listen to what is important to people and make sure they get the right support while enabling them to maintain their independence.
This has helped me through a difficult time. I wish more people knew about the service Asif, 38, diagnosed with myeloma
Di, my Macmillan volunteer, became my walking buddy. She also came to the hospital with me when no one else could and was very supportive "Patricia, 64, diagnosed with lung cancer
We also offer emotional support through volunteers, enabling people to talk about their cancer and the concerns they have, or to have some ‘time out’ from their cancer or from a caring role. For example, going out for a walk or simply having a chat about hobbies and interests. Our trained volunteers can also help find out about local activities and groups and help people feel more confident about accessing them.
It makes me feel like I am giving something back to someone who is experiencing a tricky time, it helps me to re-evaluate my own life and things that I worry about - often realising that I am actually very lucky, which has a positive effect on my own health and emotional wellbeing. Tracey, 52, volunteer
Your donations can help us to train and equip our amazing volunteers so they can feel ready and prepared to best support people affected by cancer.
Supporting the Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis Service by donating will help the service to continue to support people practically and emotionally, who are affected by cancer, in and around Nottinghamshire.
