Story

Joseph (year 6) and Noah (Year 4) will be completing the National 3 peaks challenge alongside their mum, dad and teacher Mr Maher (James) in memory of the boys Grandad Andrew Reid who volunteered at Sir John Barrow School regularly before his long illness.

The team hope to complete the three peak challenge within 24 hours, all being well. They will begin their first mountain Ben Nevis on Wednesday 2nd June, followed by Scafell Pike later that evening and to compete the challenge through the night into the early hours of Thursday morning on Snowdon.

Andrew was a weekly volunteer at Sir John Barrow School; he would read with students from different year groups, support staff on school trips when required and help at fundraising events/ summer fayre. He was always keen to support staff and students where possible and soon became a familiar face around school.

Andrew was taken ill in May 2019 and was treated in Blackburn Royal infirmary. He spoke so highly of SJB and missed working alongside the staff and students dearly. Every visit he would ask for an update on what he had missed and how individuals were progressing, particularly on the regular visits by Mr Maher.

Andrew was discharged from Blackburn hospital 11 months later and spent 4 weeks at home with his loving wife Linda but sadly passed away on 26th April 2020.

Any money that we manage to raise from our challenge will be donated to Sir John Barrow School, as we know that this is something Andrew would have wanted.

His helping within SJB commenced with his own 4 children who also attended the school and then he continued to be involved whilst 4 of his Grandchildren have attended the school.
