Since its consecration in the 17th century, St James's has been more than just a place of worship; it's a living testament to the rich tapestry of London's history. With its stunning architecture and storied past, St James's speaks of resilience, faith, and community spirit.
Beyond its magnificent facade lies a haven where everyone is welcomed with open arms, regardless of background or circumstance. From the homeless seeking warmth, companionship, and sustenance to weary travelers in need of respite, St James's opens its doors to all who seek refuge.
We are delighted to have a main avenue show garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, courtesy of Project Giving Back. Designed by Robert Myers, and under the theme ‘Imagine the World to be Different,’ our garden encourages visitors to cherish the earth and one another. It recognises the importance of gardens as welcoming spaces for healing and contemplation and pays homage to the revitalising qualities of urban green spaces.
The visibility of our garden at the show will help us raise £20m to rejuvenate the historic, Wren-designed church, and particularly to restore our Piccadilly garden. Integral to this is the creation of a new, purpose-built and imaginatively designed space for our much-loved free drop-in Caravan Counselling service, which provides 5,500 hours of free counselling each year. You can read more about our Chelsea garden here.
Our free, seven-day-a-week, drop-in and counselling service located in the garden welcomes clients from all walks of life. Run in partnership with the Centre for Counselling & Psychotherapy Education since 1982, the Caravan offers a safe and private space for around 5,000 hours of counselling a year. With your support, its place in our garden will be assured, and the accommodation for service users and access to it improved.
Whether you're a lifelong member of our community or a newcomer inspired by our mission, we hope you will become part of our story. We would like to invite you to run your own fundraising campaign to support St James's garden restoration, using JustGiving. Whether it's the 'traditional' church fundraising approach - bake sales and sponsored walks - or something a little more strenuous - sky-dives; marathons; swimming the channel...! - we hope you will join us in seeking to restore the wonderful community space our garden offers people of all faiths and none, in the heart of the West End.
