Story
At Dover Smart Project, we work with over 250 young carers aged just 5 to 18 years old. These are remarkable children and young people who take on adult responsibilities at home, cooking meals, giving medication, or providing emotional support, because someone in their family is ill, disabled, or needs extra help.
Being a young carer is an act of love, but it often comes at a cost. Childhood can be cut short, time for friends or hobbies is scarce, and the pressure can feel overwhelming. Many young carers put their own needs aside, quietly carrying responsibilities far beyond their years.
That’s where we step in. Through our weekly support sessions, creative activities, and outreach work, we give young carers a safe space to relax, laugh, and just be themselves. We connect them with others who truly understand, helping them build friendships, confidence, and resilience. We also provide practical guidance and emotional support, so they never feel like they’re facing life’s challenges alone.
Every young carer’s story is unique, but they all share something in common: strength, courage, and a need for support. By standing alongside them, Dover Smart Project helps to make sure that while they care for others, someone is also caring for them.
