Story

Give a lasting gift of Sadaqah Jariyah by donating a well to a community in Somalia. We will dedicate the well in your name or that of a loved one.

Since 1997, Mercy-USA has played a vital role in providing safe drinking water in Somalia, digging and repairing over 700 wells. These wells now positively impact the lives of hundreds of thousands.

A nearby source of safe, clean water is more than a convenience, it is a life line for health and safety. In Somalia, the task of fetching water typically falls on women and children and a nearby well saves them from traveling long distances that puts them at risk of attack from strangers or wild animals. Their days are no longer consumed with the backbreaking task of fetching water, freeing them for school and self development.

The Messenger of Allah said: When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah, (continuous charity); knowledge which is beneficial; or a virtuous descendant who prays for him.

A nearby well also insures that the water is not shared by livestock which eliminates the risk of contamination and waterborne diseases, one of the main causes of death for children under five in Somalia. The time saved, the lives saved and the sense of pride a well gives to a village or town has immeasurable impact.

A Life Changed with Clean Water

With one eye out for wild animals and strangers, Amira would leave her home just after sunrise to walk to a distant water source for her family.

Extreme hardship caused by years of war and drought, has been made even worse by climate change for Amiras pastoral community in Somalia. Before Mercy-USA built wells in this area, Amira made the long walk for water every day. We were not even sure if we would find half a jerrycan of water. With empty stomachs, we walked with fear through the acacia trees, sand storms and the scorching sun.

Before she had safe access to clean water Amira said she only managed to spend two hours at her primary school since the rest of the day was spent in search of water. Even when we did find water, it was often dirty and made us sick.

My life has really changed since the well. I attend school full-time plus madrasa! I have time to play with my friends, and I have time to study in the eveningsall simply because we have a well!
