Story

Help us transform harm into healing; help change the story in Scotland.

At Space2face, we believe in the power of conversation, creativity, and compassion to mend the wounds caused by crime and conflict. We believe that even in the most difficult situations, there is always a chance for healing. Since 2008, we've been bringing together People Harmed (victims) and People Responsible (perpetrators): supporting them to speak, listen, and find a way forward.

Our work isn’t about blame or punishment. It’s about real human connection: often creative, always courageous.

We’ve seen People Harmed feel heard for the first time. We’ve seen People Responsible take deep, genuine responsibility and accountability for their actions. We’ve seen change that lasts.

When harm happens, whether through crime, conflict or broken trust, it can leave people feeling unheard, unsafe, and stuck. We offer something different. A safe, supportive space where people can come together to talk, to listen, to heal, and to move forward.

Our approach is unique: we use Restorative Justice combined with art. Through making and gifting handmade items, like benches, felted bags, or creative journals, people find ways to express what words alone cannot. This process helps open dialogue, rebuild trust, and provides a deeper understanding.

One young man spent a year crafting a garden bench as a gift to restore the broken relationship with his foster parents. The act of making, paired with guided conversations, helped him take responsibility and allowed his foster parents to begin healing. The bench now sits in their garden: a symbol of reconciliation and hope.

Whether here, in Shetland or further afield, we work with individuals, families, schools, and organisations; where every story matters and every journey is different.

I just wanted to take this moment to put on record my incredible thanks to yourself [Clair] and Alyson for your help, support and kindship over the past 10 months. If anybody had told me a year ago that I would be looking back on this experience positively and with fondness, I'd have asked them what their next joke would be. It was very difficult a year ago to think of anything positive that may have come from any of this, but yet a year on I feel many things, including happiness, fulfilment, achievement, and that I have managed to, with a big help from all involved, turn what was definitely a negative for all involved into something that people may be able to use as a learning tool for the future.

We need your help to keep offering this space: to keep walking alongside people as they take brave steps towards healing. Our work is proven to reduce re-offending and ease the trauma experienced by those harmed.

£25 could help cover the essential tools that make our work possible: from art materials to phone calls that keep someone supported between sessions. It’s a small sum that helps open the door to big conversations.

Your gift today will help us continue this lifeline work, rooted in Shetland but reaching far beyond. By donating, you enable us to offer creative, restorative processes that change lives.

Together, we can help Scotland heal: one conversation, one creation, one connection at a time.

Footnote: We make this invitation to give with the greatest sensitivity. Our work means we are acutely aware of the increased financial pressures facing us all so please do not feel any pressure to give beyond your means. We of course, welcome the generosity of those who are in a position to give.

If you cannot give today, would you instead, consider sharing our appeal and helping us reach those who may want to give or who could benefit from our work.
