Story

SPAN'S LENTEN APPEAL 2021

This Lent above all others we want to help those in need locally and globally who are struggling in many ways and we are raising funds for 3 causes which are close to our hearts in Catholic Leamington. The Churches of St Peter Apostle, Our Lady's Lillington and St Joseph's in Whitnash are all helping to raise funds for these causes this Lent.

Myton offers specialist care and support to adult patients and their families in Coventry and Warwickshire. Patients have conditions such as cancer, heart failure, motor neurons disease, Parkinson's disease. All patients are treated free of charge. Local people are also cared for at home by Hospice professional staff. A grant of £2000 would enable 18 visits by nurses, day or night. Myton Hospice says;

Due to the inpact of Coronavirus on our ability to raise vital funds we expect to see a drop in our voluntary income of around £2 million this year

KINDAID

The Kiirua Mission, situated in the Rift Valley area of Kenya, offers loving care from a Christian Community for children who have been orphaned or abandoned. With the aim of reintegration into their own families or the wider community wherever possible, the children are nurtured and educated and given the tools to overcome past experiences and build self esteem and self confidence. Funding also supports some of the older children to access secondary school and higher education. The Mission also includes a hospital which, as well as offering primary care, provides the local residents with a range of health education programmes and support initiatives which currently include a nutrition and feeding programme for their younger children. Sister Mariapia from the Mission says -

One of the girls who completed university and found a job, when left alone out of our care become depressed not been able to care for her life (Cooking, shopping keeping the room)Now she is back with us employed in the hospital as a receptionist ,she feels secure, protected and the smile is up again in her face. She is learning how to care for her needs as she has no family, no relatives who can care for her

SPAN LOCAL APPEAL

HELP FOR FAMILIES - At Christmas we had a successful appeal to help local families in the Catholic primary schools in Leamington by funding some grocery vouchers. As the situation is now, with schools closed for a considerable time, families under stress with lack of jobs, income and stretched resources we would like to help again. Also local refugee families and others known to the parishes and the St Vincent de Paul society. We would like to give £50 to each family to help with food and expenses. One of our recent recipients said:

I was overwhelmed when I received the voucher - it made a real difference to know that people thought about us and cared.

About the charity

S t Peter’s Aid for the Needy (SPAN), which was established in 1974, works with the local Catholic community to raise money and support and to distribute where we see need. This is part of our Christian commitment to our neighbours wherever they are, near and far.Over the years SPAN has raised over one million pounds, mainly through the local Catholic community, and given it to many charities, such as local ones for homeless people, local schools for needy families, Refugee charities and many others. Internationally we support charities in Uganda, Kenya and the Lebanon often through parish connections so that we have direct feedback as to the use of our funds. We give to emergency international appeals following natural disasters etc. We receive appeals from many different charities and organisations and we use a set of principles, to guide our decisions. Many of our beneficiaries are small charities, where funds can be used as close to the need as possible. One good example is a recent Quiz raised funds for a charity ‘Hope for Children in Ndola, Zambia feeding project’ where school meals are put in place locally to encourage school attendance and improve nutrition which was extremely poor for children in that area. Another example is the ‘House of Light and Hope’ in Beirut, to which Span has been giving support for many years and where now there are still acute problems and needs. Local support workers ask our help for families.
