Support The Special Care Baby Unit at Harrogate District Hospital

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) here at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is a Level 1 special care baby unit with 7 cots. We look after babies born over 32 weeks gestation who require extra support.

Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity funds specialised equipment, training and services going above and beyond the provision of the NHS to help enhance treatment, facilities and the environment for the benefit of staff, patients, service users and families across our Hospitals and wider Community.

Story

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) here at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) is a Level 1 special care baby unit with 7 cots. We look after babies born over 32 weeks gestation who require extra support. The nurses work alongside parents to ensure they are included in their baby’s care and encourage and support areas such as breastfeeding and skin to skin. We are currently raising money to make environmental changes to the unit, for example;

1) We would like enhance the facilities provided to families and staff

2) Artwork for each room to be installed to ensure the environment is as warm and welcoming as possible

3) Create a third parents room, to allow parents to reside with their babies once they are nearing home

4) Update the current bathroom facilities available to parents.

The impact of these changes would be significant for those accessing them; having a baby born with unexpected complications is very challenging for families, therefore we want to give them a home away from home where possible.
