Little Maia and Mosi (also known as Trixie and Peanut!) were signed over to us in April at only 10 weeks old. They both had a birth defect where their right eyes did not form properly. They went straight into a foster home and we quickly realised just how cheeky these two were, even with the bad eyes!
They settled in very well at their foster home. They received so many cuddles and so much attention which they really needed and they loved every second of it! Because of their lack of fur, Sphynx cats have incredibly oily and sweaty skin, so this cheeky pair need to be bathed frequently, which has been a fun activity for all involved!
We consulted several vets in the hope that we may be able to save their second eyes. After a small operation where the fab vets Putney Animal Hospital cut back their lids to see what was lying underneath it was found that the eyes were not correctly formed, their eye lids were nonfunctional and it was very likely they did not have any sight in their right eyes. The vets advice was to enucleate (remove) these bad eyes as the defect could have resulted in chronic problems in the future.
The siblings had signs of cat flu so were kept in Putney Animal Hospital in Isolation for several days to make sure they'd have everything they needed. Maia and Mosi recovered from cat flu thanks to the wonderful staff at Putney Animal Hospital. The little ones were delighted to return to their foster parents! Three fab foster families have been involved in their care, which Maia and Mosi have enjoyed a great deal!
While they were waiting for their operations they came down with a tummy bug. Needless to say, things got a bit messy! After some medication and probiotics they were back to their very lively selves in no time.
Mosi and Maia went in for their eye removal operation and we are pleased to report that it all went very well. While they were sedated they were also neutered and microchipped to save them from having to be put under again at a later date.
When the vets were checking all them over they noticed that both had faint heart murmurs. We decided to get their hearts scanned to see if we could find out if there were any bad signs. Although a murmur may signify a problem with the heart or its blood vessels, approximately fifty per cent of healthy cats with a heart murmur don't have any underlying disease and of those that do, many live quite normally without ever developing any signs of disease. The scans indicated that little Maia's heart was slightly enlarged whereas Mosi's was within normal parameters. The vets advised to scan them again at 5 months old, so we had a little wait on our hands, but the foster parents were more than happy to have this cheeky pair back! When kittens have heart murmurs, sometimes they fade or evolve as they grow into adolescents/adulthood, which is why we wanted to re-scan them a month later.
The day came for their second heart scan. Strangely enough, the results had flipped this time, with Mosi's heart being slightly enlarged and Maia's being normal! The vet suggested there may be signs of a problem developing, but there's no way of knowing for sure. In some cases, cats simply have a murmur and nothing ever come of it! If the dynamic duo were to develop problems such as heart disease, it would be likely to affect them when they are between 5 - 10 years old, so the pair have a long time to be cheeky little cats!
Mosi and Maia have received quite a bit of interest and are having a visit this week (W/C 29th July), so please keep everything crossed that they will be reserved and start their life with their new family very soon!
These poor little things have been through so much in their short five month life! We have spent over £1000 on medical treatment and essentials for these two beauties. As of 28/07/19 we have 45 cats in our care and 15+ on our waiting list and we receive calls every day from members of the public to help take in cats needing treatment and homes. Every week we spend £100s in order to get the cats fit and ready for their forever homes so you can imagine the amount we spend on vets bills everyday! Not only medical treatment, but food, litter, boarding and everything else the cats may need.
If you can help by donating we (and Mosi and Maia!) would be extremely grateful. £5 would cover the costs of boarding for one cat for one day, £10 for the pair for a day!
We are a self funded branch of the RSPCA, funded mainly by our two charity shops and donations from kind animal lovers like you! Please consider helping these abandoned and unwanted cats by donating. If we are lucky and fortunate enough to reach our target, any extra donations will be used to help the other cats in our care.
