Asher’s Story – A Little Boy Full of Fight
At just 11 weeks old, Asher’s Mum, Sian, noticed something wasn't right. Doctors discovered a rare, life-threatening heart condition. He was placed into a coma, put on a ventilator, and underwent major heart and stomach surgery.
‘It was touch and go’ Sian recalls. ‘I couldn’t feel my legs.’ In ICU, she faced ‘the longest corridor in the world.’ Her tiny son lay covered in wires and tubes. The cardiologist took her aside and said the words no parent should ever hear: ‘It’s not looking good.’
Asher was diagnosed with Truncus Arteriosus - a rare and serious congenital heart defect. Instead of four valves, Asher had three.
He spent 100 days in Alder Hey, including time on life support. Miraculously - Asher turned a corner. He moved from ICU to HDU and then the cardiac ward. Eventually, finally, he got to go home.
Even after going home, the emergencies didn’t stop. Asher suffered choking episodes, more ICU stays, a helicopter transfer to Great Ormond Street Hospital, and sepsis that caused a stroke. Doctors told Sian her little boy now had cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
But Asher keeps defying expectations. With physiotherapy and incredible determination, he’s beginning to reach milestones once thought impossible.
In 2024, Sian found Liverpool Zoe’s Place — a place she now calls 'my second home… my village.' Asher loves sensory play, hydrotherapy and messy play, while Sian gets the rest, reassurance and community she desperately needs.
The thing I was comforted by was the fact that they are nurses…they’re qualified nurses. The more you get to know them, it felt more like home.
This Christmas, your support helps ensure children like Asher and parents like Sian have the care, comfort, and community they need at Liverpool Zoe’s Place.
