Can You Help Us to Spread the Composting?
BBG is a rich, uniquely biodiverse natural environment and one of the UKs most significant historic Botanic Gardens, Grade II* and one of Birminghams most treasured places. JC Loudons inspirational botanical garden and iconic glasshouses occupy 15 acres in a stunning landscape setting. Since 1829 it has been devoted to conservation, sharing public education and growing plant diversity. But nearly 200 years old, the historic Glasshouses and Gardens need urgent, extensive repair. Help us to reconnect people with the importance of plants and nature and create more sustainable ways of living. BBG is a registered and independent charity and receives no regular public funding. The Trust relies on income it can generate from visitors, our members, grants it can secure and the generous donations from people who share our vision to nurture and make the Gardens accessible for everyone now, and for future generations. Your donation, at whatever level, will make a difference and is very important. Please support us by donating with a card via our website, via JustGiving, writing a cheque or donating in person/cash with our staff.

BBG needs to build new, environmentally sustainable Composting Facilities, now, to enrich the soil and improve conditions to enable the plants and Botanical Gardens to grow.
The Gardens have always needed soil fertilization. Today, composting is a vital procedure to dispose of green waste, condition the soil, and improve its fertility, helping our varied living collections to thrive. The use of compost leads to a multitude of benefits for all green spaces: saving water by helping soil hold moisture; adding nutrients to soil that helps plant growth, encouraging healthy root structure; balancing soil pH (acidity); and preventing erosion. An effective composting process is pivotal to our ability to sustain a varied ecosystem of plants and soil biodiversity is key to a botanical gardens success. Our Composting redevelopment project will replace the existing 60-year-old structure with a new compost facility that can process 200m3 of green waste per year, reducing operating costs by £15,000 a year. We will begin the project as soon as all funding is in place, to be completed in Spring 2023. The total cost is £101,000 and we are delighted to have the support of prestigious environmental trusts.
Most of the funding is secured, but we need your help to raise £15,000, so the project can go ahead, or we lose our grants. Can you help us by donating to SPREAD THE COMPOSTING? Please note that the funds may be paid to a landfill operator and that gift aid may not be eligible. Your donation really will make a difference. Thank you. Reg Charity 528981.
