On Boxing Day in 2004, a giant wave struck the south east Asia coast killing over 230,000 people. One of those who sadly lost their life was Piers Simon from Somerset. His brother, Luke, a survivor from the wave, set up a charity, the Piers Simon Appeal, in his brother's memory and subsequently is the Founder & CEO of School in a Bag where all the efforts are now channelled.
To date, School in a Bag have distributed over 152,000 SchoolBags into 57 countries to help children who are deprived of an education. The SchoolBags contain stationery, eating utensils and a hygiene kit and help those who are living in poverty, displaced as refugees or orphaned, alike.
The SchoolBags funded through this campaign will bring the tsunami back full circle as although Luke, Piers and their three friends were on the island of Phi Phi in Thailand when the tsunami struck, the Rosie May Foundation was also born out of the tsunami, but in Sri Lanka. Following Rosie May's family tragedy they built the Rosie May Home for children who had lost their parents in the tsunami.
The SchoolBags and their contents for this project will be sourced in Sri Lanka. Mary, from The Rosie May Foundation says:
‘The SchoolBags will be given to children aged 3-16 who attend the free afterschool classes at Project Hope and the Rosie May Pre School which is supported by the Rosie May Foundation to give children from low income families a brighter future. All children go to local schools and would struggle to attend without these provisions’.
The more funding we receive, the more SchoolBags we can fund. It's a simple as that. Your £20 will fund one SchoolBag, but has the power to transform a child's life giving them the resources they need, to receive the education they deserve.
Thank you.
