Story

“The future would be so much bleaker if we didn’t have CPotential helping our son achieve his potential.” – Stanley’s Mum

When Stanley’s family first walked through the doors of CPotential, they arrived exhausted, worried, and unsure of what the future might hold. What they found was more than therapy.

They found people who listened.

For the first time, someone listened to what Stanley needed, to the challenges the family were facing, and to the hopes they had quietly held onto.

They met specialists who truly saw Stanley — who understood his needs, his personality, and his strengths. Warmth, skill, and compassion came together to create a place where the family felt welcomed and supported.

Stanley’s story shows exactly why CPotential is a lifeline for children with movement disorders, developmental delays, and complex medical needs — and why we urgently need supporters like you to ensure this vital help remains within reach for every family who needs it.

A Difficult Start, and an Unforgettable Moment

At just 14 weeks pregnant, Stanley’s parents learned there was a 99% chance their baby would be born with Down syndrome. The news was delivered coldly, without compassion, and filled with assumptions that left them shocked and upset.

“They referred to him as ‘the foetus’ and spoke about termination as if it were the expected choice. I hung up. They didn’t see him the way we did — as our baby boy.”

After the initial shock, Stanley’s mum dedicated herself to learning everything she could so she could prepare, accept, and look forward to welcoming him.

Feeling Lost in the System

In Stanley’s early months, life took an unexpected and frightening turn. He developed West syndrome (infantile spasms) — a rare and severe form of epilepsy that caused distressing seizures and led to significant developmental delays. The steroid-based treatment he needed brought its own challenges too, temporarily causing Cushing syndrome, swelling his face and tongue, and putting tremendous strain on his little body.

Although Stanley has thankfully been seizure-free for many years, the impact of those early months shaped the support he would need as he grew.

As Stanley got older and his developmental needs became clearer, his family tried every possible avenue of help. But the combination of early medical challenges and his Down syndrome made it hard to find the specialist guidance they were desperate for.

“We didn’t always know what to do, and at times it felt like there just wasn’t anywhere with the specialist input Stanley needed.”

Meanwhile, daily life at home was becoming physically demanding. As Stanley became taller and heavier, lifting him and managing stairs grew increasingly difficult and sometimes unsafe.

“It was back-breaking. I was really worrying for the future.”

Reconnecting with CPotential marked a turning point — a place where the family finally felt understood, supported, and guided by specialists who could help Stanley progress with confidence.

Finding CPotential

This time, the family committed to CPotential’s specialist therapies — and the change was immediate.

“After the very first session, Stanley was able to bottom-shuffle up the stairs on his own. We were stunned.”

Stanley met therapists who truly understood him — his needs, his challenges, and his potential. They created therapy plans just for him, supported him when he became overwhelmed, and guided his progress with skill and care.

“They are so focused, professional and caring. They meet him where he is and help him move forward. It’s truly humbling to watch.”
