Stay Warm, Stay Healthy: Supporting vulnerable adults in Berkshire this winter

The Winter Fuel Allowance cut will put many vulnerable adults in Berkshire at risk this winter. Our community nurse teams expect to see a rise in individuals at high risk due to poor health, limited mobility, and lack of adequate heating.

The official charity for Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, we are dedicated to enhancing community and mental health services for people of all ages. We provide additional support for NHS services beyond standard funding, to help improve mental health and community healthcare in Berkshire.

Story

As winter approaches, vulnerable adults in Berkshire face growing risks due to the harsh weather and rising fuel costs. With the Winter Fuel Allowance cut and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, many elderly individuals and those with chronic or mental health conditions are at a higher risk of cold-related health issues. These individuals often lack the resources to keep warm, putting them at risk of hypothermia, respiratory problems, and deteriorating well-being.

Fuel poverty has become a growing concern across the UK, and Berkshire is no exception. The Winter Fuel Allowance cut is particularly affecting older adults and people with chronic or mental health conditions. These individuals often rely on this allowance to heat their homes and purchase essential items like warm clothing and blankets. Without adequate heating, they are at greater risk of serious health complications.

According to the Office for National Statistics, vulnerable adults are more likely to suffer from cold-related illnesses during the winter months. A lack of proper heating and warm clothing can lead to issues such as:

Hypothermia

Increased respiratory infections

Mental health deterioration, including depression and anxiety

The situation is made even more challenging for those with limited mobility, who may be confined to their homes for long periods and struggle to stay active and warm.

To address these urgent needs, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has launched a campaign to provide Winter Essentials Packs to the most vulnerable members of our community. These packs will include items such as:

Blankets

Thermos flask

Thermal socks

Hot water bottle

Each pack is designed to help individuals stay warm and healthy during the colder months, directly reducing the risk of cold-related health issues.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used to purchase these vital winter supplies. We aim to distribute 400+ Winter Essentials Packs through our community nurse teams, who will identify and target the most at-risk individuals in Berkshire.

Every pound you donate will go towards purchasing these essential items, ensuring that vulnerable adults receive the support they need to stay warm and safe this winter.

Our goal is simple: to provide immediate, practical support to elderly adults and individuals with chronic or mental health conditions. We aim to reduce the impact of fuel poverty and prevent cold-related illnesses by distributing these winter packs. By working closely with our community nurse teams, we ensure that the right help reaches the people who need it most.

Berkshire Healthcare is uniquely qualified to deliver this project due to our extensive experience in supporting vulnerable adults. Our community nurse teams regularly work with elderly individuals, people with chronic health conditions, and those facing mental health challenges, providing them with healthcare, guidance, and emotional support.

“We see first-hand how hard winter can be for those without proper resources,” one of our community nurses shared. “It’s heart breaking to know that many of our patients simply can’t afford to keep their homes warm. This project will help ease that burden.”

We need your support to make this project a success. By donating to our Winter Essentials Packs campaign, you are directly contributing to the health and well-being of vulnerable adults in Berkshire.
