Did you know there are over 30 green spaces in Southwark? From Southwark Park to Dulwich Park, each one plays a vital role in the lives of young people, providing them opportunities to boost their physical and mental health through play, access to nature, and connection with their community.
For Step Out Mentoring, we cherish the green spaces we do have because many of our mentoring sessions take place in the parks near where our mentees live. We see on a daily basis the transformative impact that having access to green Spaces has on isolated young people.
This is the inspiration for our next Step Out Mentoring Fundraiser.
To raise awareness and celebrate the importance of young people connecting with nature in our community, we will run, cycle, and walk around every green space in Southwark in a day.
To our knowledge, this has never been done before as an organised event!
Step-Out Mentoring is an early intervention mentoring organisation that provides support for children and young people in the heart of Southwark through outdoor based 1:1 mentoring and group workshops.
We work with children and young people aged 8-18 who are disengaged with education and/or life. Our vision is to see children and young people supported through tough times and empowered with the skills and emotional resilience to thrive in life and play positive roles in their communities. Supporting children and young people who have been struggling with mental health issues in the shadow of Covid-19. These young people will have been struggling with complex issues exacerbated by the pandemic, and so a safe outdoor based program opens up opportunity to re-build resilience and confidence, as well as helping them to re-engage with their families, schools and wider communities. We work to support them in forging a way through life, encouraging them to thrive and become positive change makers in their communities.
Step Out Mentoring trains and recruits local volunteers and then matches them to young people who are referred to our service through GP's, Social services, Schools and health centres. The volunteer mentors meet the young people once a week for outdoor based sessions. The sessions last for 12 months and provide an opportunity to walk alongside young people and create spaces where they can talk about their challenges and process what they are going through. Whilst enjoying fun engaging sessions such as cycling, boxing, swimming, art or just going for a walk.
