St Just Parish Church - Churchyards Fund

We are seeking donations to support regular grass cutting and maintenance of the churchyards in particular the Higher Churchyard at Bosavern, St Just. Unfortunately, there are no budgets to cover this important and sensitive work.

Our ancient, grade II listed church is a fine medieval building at the heart of St Just-in-Penwith in West Cornwall. Our aim is to raise funds to preserve and enhance the Churchyards for future generations.

Story

This ongoing appeal seeks to raise donations to protect, enhance and promote the rich heritage of the Churchyards of St Just-in-Penwith Parish Church (the Churchyard around the Church, the Lower Churchyard just behind the Church and the Higher Churchyard at Bosavern, St Just.)

Our Churchyards like most have a bit of an image problem the problem is they don’t have much of an image at all. Sadly, though not surprisingly, most communities including our own have little understanding of their significance. Most people perceive them as just the last resting place of the dearly departed; places we glimpse, idly, as we pass along the road, but not places we think about otherwise. Many look away because they’re uncomfortable or unfamiliar with deaths part in life, unaware of the celebration of life and history within, and the great economic enterprise of creating the memorials and celebration.

Our Churchyards offer a visual and physical record of St Just's human history its link to the trades of the parish, farming, fishing and mining. Maintaining these places enables current generations to get in touch what came before them (their ancestors). They are contemplative and a veritable architectural encyclopaedia of monumental styles, ashlar graves, Celtic Crosses etc and in their own way beautiful and unique.

This ongoing appeal is beneficial to the local community both socially (understanding and awareness to the local community, family historians and visitors) and would support a better understanding St Just's role within the UNESCO World Heritage site and the Tin Coast.
