Floral Cascade in Aid of Stogumber Church, MIND and Children's Hospice South West

Organised by Stogumber Church

The amazing Floral Cascade was created by women of Stogumber to raise money to maintain the ancient and beautiful Church of Stogumber and to support two wonderful charities: MIND and the Children's Hospice South West

We are an inclusive and friendly church, welcoming to both villagers and visitors, no matter how strong or tentative your faith, whatever your background or circumstances, and whether you come often, sometimes or only occasionally. Our Church may be ancient, but it is accessible, and we will happily give any assistance that you need to join us for worship or social events, so do get in touch. We have a service most Sundays. Our style of worship is mostly traditional, using the ancient and beautiful Book of Common Prayer, but we are not stuffy. We also use the more modern Common Worship for alternate Sunday Communion services. Music is important in our worship, and we have a good organ, talented organist and accomplished choir of about a dozen, who lead the hymns, psalms, sung responses and anthems. But don't feel you have to be a wonderful singer - there are also many of us who are not! We have a peal of six bells and a band of enthusiastic ringers. After services, we gather at the back of the church for a chat over fresh coffee and biscuits (in the morning), sherry (after Evensong) and sometimes even mulled wine and mince pies at Christmas. Members of the congregation contribute to many aspects of parish life, including the Stogumber Good Neighbours scheme, village school, community lunches and village breakfasts - good food is a feature of Stogumber!

Story

When we found that our beautiful Grade 1 Listed Church needs £14,000 repairs (mainly to the roof and stonework to keep the rain out) it was a big blow, after two years when Covid had blighted our usual fundraising activity. We are a village of only 450 people in rural West Somerset, so the Church building is a heavy responsibility. But despondency is not the Stogumber way!

Inspired by the Barley Flower Tower in Hertfordshire and initiated by Wendy Symes, the ladies of the village (and one or two men!) made a plan to cover the Church porch with flowers to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. But it was soon decided to create a cascade the full height of the Church tower. All 18 metres / 60 feet of it!

The winter of 2021-22 saw the return of Covid and many elderly and vulnerable residents had to be cautious, but knitting, crocheting and stitching flowers was a community activity that they could be part of, and small groups would gather in the Church to attach them to the vast net 18m x 5m.

With the help of Firemen from our local station in Williton, the cascade was hauled to the top of the tower, and makes an amazing sight.

Alongside looking after our beautiful building, we care for the wellbeing of people within and beyond our small community, so we are sharing the money raised with two wonderful charities: MIND and the Children's Hospice South West.

Many thanks for supporting us!
