Story
Why we’re asking for your help
Winter is the hardest time of year for the people we support. Higher energy bills, reduced work hours, school holidays, and increased living costs all collide. For many families, the pressure becomes overwhelming.
Last winter our food bank fed 1000s of people, and this year demand is rising again. Parents are asking for help earlier. Older people are coming in for the first time. Families who managed to cope last year now find themselves struggling.
Glasgow South West Foodbank is providing emergency food, warm clothing, household essentials, and specialist financial and wellbeing support within our food bank centres — but we cannot sustain this work without help from the community.
The reality for people we support
Recently, a mother was referred to us by her GP. She was struggling to feed her children after moving house, dealing with a long-term disability, and without the support she needed at home. Through our food bank, she not only received emergency food, but also got help installing a key safe for her carers, some urgent repairs to her home, a school clothing grant for her children, and a food voucher to use where she wanted to shop. That gave her choice and dignity, which is absolutely key.
Stories like hers are becoming more common. People are trying their best, but they’re being overwhelmed by circumstances outside their control.
Your donation helps us provide:
* Emergency food parcels
* Warm clothing and winter items
* Hygiene products and household essentials
* Advice, advocacy, and support pathways
* A welcoming, dignified space where people are treated with respect
Where your money goes
We are a small, local, independent charity. Every pound genuinely counts.
£10 provides a food top-up for an individual
£25 pays for a nutritionally balanced food parcel for two people in crisis
£50 stocks a week’s worth of food for a family of three.
£100 pays for a qualified financial advisor or Community Links Worker to support people in our food bank for one day.
These are realistic costs based on our current demand and supply needs.
Nothing here is inflated.
Why your support matters right now
Winter is when need spikes — and our resources are already stretched.
Donations during this appeal will allow us to:
1. Meet rising demand in December and January
2. Keep essential supplies stocked
3. Support families through the school holidays
4. Ensure people have warmth, food and critical advice when they need it most
Your support means we don’t need to turn anyone away. It means families get help immediately rather than waiting. It means older people don’t sit in cold homes because they’ve prioritised food over heating.
Please donate if you can
If you’re able to support this appeal, your gift — large or small — will directly help local families through a tough winter.
Thank you for helping us support our community.
Glasgow South West Foodbank is a registered Scottish charity (SC045121) serving families across Glasgow. All funds raised through this appeal will support our frontline food bank services during winter 2025/26.
