Story
The Friends of Jesmond Library are updating the children's area for the first time in 10 years! We all know how important access to books and reading is for children from the earliest years to aid literacy and communication skills. Lots of pre-school children missed out during enforced periods at home during lockdown and we want to help them by opening up the world of books.
We have consulted users and the huge majority of children brought into the library are under 5. The children's area is a resource for parents and carers too , giving those who may feel isolated an opportunity to socialise with others in the same situation. The results of our survey show that parents want better seating - with backs rather than benches - for reading to their children, and more space for children to browse the books and toys we offer.
We're planning to commission a special Story Chair and buy new seating with dedicated storage underneath, table for children to draw at and a brand new notice board for their artwork and relevant announcements.
Please help us to create an attractive space to introduce children to the joys of books and reading.
