St Thomas’ Clock Repair Appeal

The St Thomas’ Church clock is broken. It needs new motors and gearing, and scaffolding so engineers can reach the clock faces. UPDATE: We’ve booked the repairers and the clock should be fixed before Easter 2026 - but we still need to hit our target

St Thomas’ is a Grade 1 listed Georgian building. It has a very special plaster barrel vault ceiling (not unlike that of St Martin’s in the Fields, London) and some fine stained glass windows. The church plays an important role in the life of the town centre of Stourbridge. Because of its age, it is in continual need of repair and maintenance to preserve its heritage. We have made steady progress in repairing the external fabric of the church and securing the integrity of the building but there is so much more to do. Our next projects include a full renovation of the organ (estimated cost £150,000 to £200,000), improvements to lighting and sound systems and installation of a new audio visual system. Raising funds through donation for the upkeep of the church is only one aspect of our life and work. We support many local, national and international charities through our own fund raising events. We have a thriving music tradition with an all-age choir and hold regular choral, Eucharist and family services. We have a dedicated team of volunteers who keep our church running for the benefit of the local community and visitors. The above would not be possible without the continual giving from our congregation. The above and more is possible with your one-off donation or, better still, regular giving. Please contact us (details on our website) if you would like further information about our work and mission - we would love to hear from you.

Story

Since St Thomas' church tower was erected in the 19th century, the good people of Stourbridge have been checking the church clock for the time. Even today, gazing up at the tower is easier than getting your phone out.

The clock is currently broken. You probably noticed, it’s not telling the correct time for a while, and we’ve been having professional assessments of its condition. It needs new motors and gearing, and other modifications to get the clock ticking again.

We will need almost £13,000 to fix the problems and to pay for scaffolding (and VAT of course). We hope to draw on the generosity of our whole community, to get the clock repaired and to make Stourbridge Tick again!

We’ll be grateful for every donation, and will be delighted to publicly celebrate contributions from corporate donors.
