Story

Sue’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Diagnosed with MS in 1997, Sue faced significant challenges, including several difficult relapses. Determined to take back control, she began gentle exercise—something that would grow into a lifelong passion. Her experience as a Medic Gamesmaker at the London 2012 Olympics reignited her love of running, and from that moment on, it became a powerful force in her life, supporting both her physical and mental wellbeing.

Since then, Sue has gone on to complete an incredible 34 marathons and 9 ultra-distance events. She is currently training for her 9th London Marathon, having shown remarkable strength in overcoming breast cancer after deferring her place last year. Alongside her personal achievements, Sue has raised over £30,000 for MS-UK, a cause that remains deeply close to her heart.

Sue is also a passionate community leader. For over a decade, she has led a local running group, creating an inclusive and supportive environment for runners of all abilities. She firmly believes that running is for everyone and works with people of all ages—including those in their 80s—and with a wide range of medical conditions. Her encouragement helps others build confidence, improve their wellbeing, and feel proud of their achievements—something she finds incredibly rewarding to witness.

After retiring as an NHS Nurse Practitioner in 2022, Sue has continued her dedication to helping others through her work with VCWB as an Outreach Worker for Suicide Prevention. She delivers Suicide First Aid courses across the community and has already facilitated 38 sessions, equipping people with vital skills to support those in need.

Sue is now running at Parallel, championing “running for all” and raising funds to support VCWB so it can continue its vital work supporting the voluntary, community, and social enterprise sector, as well as the wider West Berkshire community.

Every step Sue takes is not just a personal achievement, but a powerful statement of hope, inclusion, and community spirit.
