Story
Over the years inadequate school infrastructure and funding has hampered progress in Bangladeshi schools. The number of children dropping out of school in Bangladesh without even receiving basic elementary education is alarming, latest figures show that 20% of children dropout before finishing elementary school. There are many reasons for this shocking statistic but the most common being the need of the child to earn an income to support the family. So, by supporting the student's family, we will be keeping them in education for the chance of a better life in the long run. This will enable them to lift themselves out of poverty and the never ending cycle of the hand out culture.
We are trying to raise funds to complete the building of the Meherunnessa and Md Ali School in Osmani Nagar, Sylhet. Half of it has already been built, due to some generous help from people like you. The other half cannot be built due to lack of funds. After it is built we hope to support the school with some regular help maintaining the school.
There are currently 125 students enrolled with 7 teachers meaning there is about an 18:1 student-to-teacher ratio ensuring the school is well within the government target of 30:1. Once the school is fully built it will be capable of catering for 200 students between the ages of 5 and 11.
The main concern for us is to increase the number of attendees to the school to ensure no child in this area goes through life without basic education. The elementary school curriculum teaches Bangla, English, Mathematics, Science, Moral Education (including Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism), Bangladesh and World Studies, PE, Arts and Crafts and Music. After graduation students go onto study at Burunga Iqbal Ahmed High School & College.
We can proudly report that over the last 2 years 100% of students attending this school have progressed onto secondary education. This school was ranked 12th best in Bangladesh by the British Council as part of the International School Award in 2019 showing that the quality of education provided is very high, all that stands in the way of progress now is the lack of proper resources and good infrastructure.
Elementary education is free for every child in Bangladesh but providing this becomes impossible in the face of inadequate funding and resources. It costs approximately 10,000Tk (approx. £90) to provide education for a child each year and yearly running of the school comes to 580,000Tk per year (approx. £5223). Education is something we often take for granted but for many in less privileged positions, education is the key to a better life, please donate to help us continue the amazing work and provide an education for these young children.
