Story

Remembering Victoria & Cycling for The Community Hospice

In April 2024, we tragically lost Victoria to cancer. During her courageous battle, The Community Hospice provided invaluable support, offering a much-needed lease of life and precious time with her loved ones.

To honour Victoria's memory and express our gratitude to the Community Hospice, Luigi is embarking on a challenging virtual cycle ride: from the UK to Melbourne, Australia!

The Journey: Luigi will be covering a grueling distance of 15,000km throughout 2025, sharing updates and stories along the way. This "journey" will not only be a physical challenge but also a testament to Victoria's strength and the incredible work of The Community Hospice.

Why The Community Hospice: The Hospice provided unwavering support to Victoria and our family during a difficult time. Their compassionate care gave allowed precious moments together and brought a sense of peace and dignity to Victoria's final days.

Your Support: Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference. Your generosity will help The Community Hospice continue to provide vital care and support to families facing similar challenges.

Let's honor Victoria's memory and support those in need. Please donate generously.

*UPDATE* 05/06/2025

"So the end of May has landed already and as we tip into June I am sitting (Peddling in fact) at 6350KM, just above where I need to be (6250).

Remembering that this is a virtual ride, I am currently approaching the border of Botswana and should be crossing into South Africa in the next few days. I am guessing that come the end of June I will be approaching Cape Point, after which the next land mass is likely to be OZ, but that remains a long (long) way away!

The last few months have been a mixed bag of Kms, from ( the real world of) Southern Ireland and ‘double punctures’, not much fun TBH, to Giraffe and newfound friends from Colorado. As always time in the saddle gives me heaps of time to think, love/life and the Universe, and perhaps one day maybe I can do this ride for real I say to myself – how cool would that be!

Vic always front and centre of these rides, be it indoors, Road, Home or away, she is there! Massive kudos to Mike who ran the London marathon in April, see if you can spot his ‘loud’ running top in one of the pictures.

OH….. and my Son (James) and his wife (Catherine) had the arrival of their second child ‘Theo’, (27th May), believe it or not they actually live in Oz, so I better get a wiggle on and get there!!!

Next stop SA, a lot of water, and onward to OZ……8,650 KM to go! Eek!

and for those that want to know –

• 203hrs and 30 mins ride time…..

• 19,334M elevation gain

• 107 Rides

• Calories burned on the rides = 113,008 (I did say I was always hungry! 😊)"

*UPDATE* 24/03/2025

As of March 24th, I have cycled the length of Kent all the way to the Sahara Desert.

*UPDATE* 07/03/2025

"The year is flying past, we are in March already, all of which has given me two full months to start this journey, and dare I say a lot of time (on the bike) to reflect. As I do so I break 2700km into a few components - the time, the KMs, the places and the people.

2700KM into my 15,000km seems like a small dent, but it has given me the confidence that I can achieve this goal, all be it with a v long way to go still. My time on the bike (Stationary trainer and Road bike) has totalled appx 85 hours of pedalling, and about 43,000 Calories! 😊

Some of the pictures are from home, you will spot the fire place (and a bike), some are from the gym in Johannesburg and Cape Town with lovely views out across the city and ocean, I was in South Africa on business, and yes I continued to tap away on the pedals when I got spare time in the evenings and the mornings, very early mornings!😊.

As mentioned, whilst in South Africa I had the chance to get out early (5.00am/5.30am) on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and as you will see I caught up with some old friends, and some new, as I travelled around the ‘cradle of humankind’.

• To old friends, Cheyne, Robyn – Thank you so much for the call out and the company.

• And the new friends. All the boys and girls (From team Vitality) who helped me out when I picked up another flat tyre, thank you so much for the ‘’we take care of each other’’ words and all your help! Chris and Fletch in particular, you are super stars!

• Random strangers, those that just said hello and joined me on a few KMs, you all helped me along – bless you!

For those that would like to see more, I am on Strava capturing every peddle stroke from ride to ride. If you choose to follow me, well that would be great, and you are most welcome, but to sponsor me AND follow me, well that would be divine! 😊

The real work happens in the Hospice, and every penny counts, so please help me to help them!

Thank you" - Luigi
