Story
Will you give a talented student the helping hand they need?
Every year, a new generation of students arrives in Manchester full of ambition and ready to make their mark on the world. Within our walls, we prepare students from all backgrounds to dream big, tackle global challenges, and become the leaders who will take us forward.
Breaking down barriers
But for many, getting here isn’t easy. Rising wealth inequality threatens to put university further out of reach for those with the odds already stacked against them.
Some students will be the first in their family to enter higher education. Others will have faced difficult personal circumstances or grown up in low‑income households.
At Manchester, education without barriers has been our principle since 1824 – but we can’t achieve this without your help. Your support today will give students the opportunity not only to get here, but to thrive once they do.
Will’s story
Will grew up in a low‑income household and dreamed of becoming an accountant. But as the first in his family to go to university, the path ahead was uncertain.
When his offer came, Will’s family was thrilled – but worried about how he’d manage financially. Thanks to a donor‑funded scholarship, he didn’t have to put his dream on hold. The support he received meant he could accept his place at Manchester and make the most of his time here.
My scholarship made everything possible. I’ve had opportunities I never thought I’d be able to take — and I’m so excited for what comes next. – Will, BSc Management (Accounting and Finance), 2025

Helping students reach their potential
Too many bright people grow up believing that university isn’t for them. They may be the first in their family. They may not see how they’ll ever afford it. Or they may worry they won’t fit in.
But your support today will change that.
With your support today, you’ll:
- Provide life‑changing scholarships for students who need them most
- Offer urgent financial support when unexpected costs hit
- Help students take part in university life, internships and career‑building opportunities
- Ensure every student feels they belong – and has the support to thrive at Manchester
Defining the future together
Your support today will help talented students accept their place at Manchester – and make the most of their time once they’re here.
Help us prove that when challenges arise, Manchester says: Challenge Accepted.
