Story
2015 saw the beginning of the biggest movement of displaced people since world war 2. Greece was on the forefront of the crisis, and struggled to cope with providing basic care due to the country's own economic situation.
It was small grassroot groups and organisations that began to plug the gaps in care. Aegean Solidarity Network Team UK (ASN Team UK) was born in Summer 2015, in response to the crisis and worked to help provide funds to the grassroot organisations on the ground.
One of the organisations ASN Team UK has a long standing working relationship with is Athens based, Love Without Borders (LWB). They aim to provide refugees in Greek camps, shelters, and housing communities with a source of emotional expression and economic self-empowerment while giving them a platform to spread awareness of the conditions in which they live.
Love Without Borders aims to provide donation funded art supplies to people from the refugee community; men, women, and children alike, then exhibit and sell the resulting works of art around the world with the help of communities that help to host art shows. LWB return 100% of the earnings from the sale of refugees artwork to the artist who created each piece.
In addition they raise funds for, purchase and distribute material aid to fill the immediate and unmet needs of these and other refugees. This aid includes but is not limited to tents and sleeping bags for people sleeping outside, temporary housing for particularly vulnerable individuals and their families, hygiene products for women and children, and food for refugees with no financial aid that are living in camps and housing communities.
There are currently some 120,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, many living in dire conditions in camps, squats and other accommodation.
