Switch on the Future is an expert group of networkers and connectors tackling the root causes of connectivity inequality, bringing people, communities and technology together now and for the future to connect schools and inspire children to emerge from poverty.

Story

In the UK alone there are 9 million people who don't have the ability to access the internet for school and professional purposes. The digital divide, if not closed will affect millions of the UK's poorest people.

What is the digital divide?

The digital divide is the gap between people in society who have full access to digital technologies (such as computers and internet) and those who do not. Concerns about the digital divide have been particularly acute during the COVID-19 pandemic - when underprivileged children prevented from being in the classroom have often gone without any tuition because they havent had devices.

People may be digitally excluded for multiple reasons, including not having access to the required infrastructure and/or devices, lack of skills, or lack of motivation to use technology.

COVID has demonstrated yet again that disadvantaged communities need help with digital connectivity. Without it, children and schools are being left behind, locked in a society of inequality - unable to help themselves.

Through funding from supporters like you, Switch on the Future has helped local London's Columbia Primary School with devices providing immediate benefit for their students.

Our disadvantaged families struggle the most during lockdown and the digital divide adds an extra layer of challenge. We had given out all the laptops available to us in school and still had more families urgently needing devices for home learning. Fortunately, Switch on the Future came to the rescue. A conversation and email exchange led to a next day delivery of laptops ready for our pupils to use. - Columbia Primary School, Tower Hamlets, London

By providing connectivity we will inspire future growth and prosperity in societies that need help the most, but we need your help!

How you can help?
