The campaign has now expired but it's not too late to support this charity.
Visit the charity's profileHaving friends and socialising is a major part of many people’s lives. Strong friendships are good for both our mental and physical health and wellbeing – people are likely to live longer if they have close friends and supportive networks. But for many people with learning disabilities and autism, social isolation is an unfortunate reality.
Loneliness among adults with learning disabilities and autism is alarmingly and disproportionately high. According to Mencap, a third of adults with learning disabilities have no more than yearly contact with friends. And the disability charity Sense found that nearly two thirds (61%) of disabled people were chronically lonely, and this was even higher (70%) for young disabled people.
Carers, too, are affected. In Wandsworth, where two of our sites are located, only 11% of carers have as much social contact as they’d like, according to the Wandsworth Carers’ Centre.
These statistics reveal a heartbreaking truth: many people in our community are facing life without the joy and support of friendship.
Our students tell us that making friends is one of the most rewarding parts of coming to Share. Through our befriending service, we match volunteer befrienders with our students so they can regularly enjoy each other’s company and broaden their social network.
We provide training to our volunteers and cover costs for activities and outings, ensuring these friendships thrive in a safe, supported environment. The impact is profound: students can do things they’ve always wanted to do with a friend, families know their loved one is safe and happy in the community with someone to look out for them, and volunteers learn more about how to communicate with and support people with additional needs.
As the Christmas season approaches, a time when so many of us cherish moments with friends and loved ones, please support our students to make friendships that will enhance their lives all year long. Every donation helps bring people together, fostering happiness, health and wellbeing.
