Story
Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches (TAD) is Scotland’s leading ethnographic repository of digitised folklore and folklife audio recordings, drawn from the archives of the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh, the Canna Collection administer by the National Trust for Scotland, and the BBC’s Gaelic-language radio archives.
As of January 2025, TAD has published 47,618 audio tracks on its website, totalling more than 3,500 hours of material, including songs, stories, oral histories, poems, instrumental music, biographies, and much more.
Users can currently perform complex searches on the website - what it lacks however, is the ability to display location data on a map interface.
This is something our users have been requesting for years as evidenced in our 2024 Website User Survey, when 96, out of 101 respondents said they would like an map interface on the TAD website.

The map would be fantastic. Clicking on the map which would then take you to options of stories, songs, etc. would be wonderful from a research perspective!
The inclusion of a map, would be useful. When trying to find out about my community it would be nice to see which contributors are in the same geographical area as the stories and traditions.
So far the TAD team have successfully raised the majority of the funding required to cover the cost of the technical devleopment work and outreach sessions in communities and schools after the update is complete. However, we still require a further £2,500 to complete the work.
If you are a regular user of the TAD website, we would really appreciate it if you could donate to this funding campaign.
Le meas,
Sgioba TAD.
