Welcome to our #TeamRAID2022 fundraiser! We have a team of eight awe-inspiring runners who will be racing through London's iconic parks this October in the Royal Parks Half Marathon.
The runners will be raising money for Rights and Accountability in Development (RAID), a gutsy corporate watchdog that takes on multinational companies who disregard human rights and destroy the environment. RAID's team of lawyers and researchers stand together with frontline communities in Africa, and elsewhere, to bring companies to justice.
RAID uses the law to confront abusive companies. We conduct forensic research, including field work, at a level of detail that enables us to bring cases against companies in courts and before supervisory bodies.
But our work is only possible through the courage and tireless work of frontline communities and activists. They know first-hand that holding companies to account can mean putting your life and your livelihood at risk.
This fundraiser is for the work of RAID and the local activists, grassroots organisers and monitors documenting corporate harms in real time. Sponsoring one of our eight RAID runners is a great way to help bring about real change, justice and remedy.
Please stand with us!
We are proud of what we have achieved.
This year, we supported pro-bono lawyers at the Centre d'Aide Juridico-Judiciaire (CAJJ) in DR Congo. Together we secured a rare legal victory in Congolese courts against a Chinese multinational mining company for abuses of workers' rights. It set an important new precedent, paving the way for other workers to demand that labour laws are respected.
What's more, together with CAJJ lawyers, we exposed widespread workers' rights abuses at large-scale cobalt mines in Congo who supply the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturers. It was covered in The Guardian, The Verge and BBC World Service, among other channels. It was even highlighted in a congressional meeting in the USA.
We also helped achieve a far-reaching and innovative civil settlement between 96 Tanzanian human rights victims and UK-listed diamond mining company, Petra Diamonds. Together with British lawyers, RAID helped to achieve $6.1 million in compensation, as well as extensive changes to the company's management practices on security and human rights.
Your donations will help us to do more. Thank you!
