Story

Deafness is an invisible disability; learning, communicating and participating in everyday activities can be problematic. Deaf children and young people face daily communication breakdown, require increased and on-going resilience to bounce back from negative experiences. These experiences can contribute to the exclusion that they feel and often prevents them from fully participating in what life has to offer; socialising with friends, experiencing jobs, developing positive relationships etc.

Phoenix work with young people to help them develop resilience, teach them communication strategies and help them to learn skills required to live in a hearing world. The opportunities to make new friends and learn new skills is impactful and something which can be life changing for some members, that is why the Phoenix charity exists.

About the charity

Through the delivery of programmes, we support deaf children and young people in Hertfordshire to develop skills to manage their deafness, to advocate for themselves, to practice communication tactics and those skills that are essential for their successful integration into the hearing world.
