Story
The confidence to “just be me”.
Two years ago, Seb took a brave step.
They walked into one of our social spaces for the first time, totally terrified, but they showed up anyway.
Their confidence was low then and anxiety often got in the way of them connecting with others, but with time and encouragement they started to come out of their shell.
Today, Seb’s confidence has soared. They have become a driving force in our groups, supporting others to feel welcome and included, sharing ideas and leading activities. They are now a familiar and uplifting presence, someone who brings people together and helps create the kind of space where others can also feel safe to be themselves.
That one brave step opened the door to a community that feels like home and gave Seb the confidence to “just be me”. And we want to make sure that whenever someone is ready to take that step, we’re here to welcome them.
“Looking back to when I first came along totally terrified to the group, I feel like I’ve found my community, and myself in lots of ways. The group has just been this amazing safe haven where I’ve been able to slowly come out of my shell, make friends who understand me, and just be me.”
The truth is, Seb’s story represents so many others. As we reflect on our work over the past year, a clear theme shines through: when people spend time in supportive, affirming spaces, and connect with others like themselves, they feel free to “just be me”.
Together, we can keep these spaces open so every LGBTQ+ person in Scotland can find not just a place to belong, but a place to thrive.
Help us create more “just be me” spaces for others like Seb.
Right now, demand for our services has never been greater. At a time where our community is under attack, we are here to be a safe haven.
But we can’t do it alone. Every call answered, every door kept open, every voice heard depends on all of us.
This season of giving, will you help make that possible? Your gift, no matter how big or small, keeps these life-affirming spaces alive.
Here’s what your gift could look like:
• £10 to reach the most isolated
Could help us cover travel costs so someone can join a group or service they otherwise couldn’t access.
• £25 for a listening ear
Could support the running of our helpline and digital support services, ensuring trained staff are there when someone needs to talk.
• £50 for a step towards healing
Could help us provide affirming counselling to support people cope with trauma, identity stress, and other overwhelming challenges.
• £100 for an empowering community workshop
Could help us fund a group workshop on mental wellbeing, confidence, or transition support, covering facilitation, materials, and a safe space to learn, share and connect.
