Story

The Meath Heritage

Our Grade II listed manor house and extensive grounds were left to us by our founder Mary, Countess of Meath. Mary’s gift of a ‘safe and happy home’ is one that we are extremely thankful for. Her gift grew into a 130-year legacy which has enabled us to provide generations of vulnerable adults with the best care possible in a wonderful home.

As responsible custodians, we must look after this gift, so that The Meath can provide a safe and happy home to vulnerable adults over many years to come. In order to achieve this, we have launched The Meath Capital Appeal.

Our Main Building

Our historic main building, dates from the 17th Century and was once home to General James Oglethorpe who founded the state of Georgia, USA. In 1891 The Countess of Meath set about adapting the house to suit her vision of a ‘safe and happy home’ for people who lived with epilepsy. Over 130 years later, we need to future-proof our beautiful home by caring for the fabric of the Grade II listed building. Large sections of the roof need replacing, along with further external works, including the replacement, or repair of windows. Our planned works will honour our heritage and remain in keeping with the historical house, while ensuring that we continue to deliver the best care possible with all modern comforts.

The Meath Capital Appeal will enable us to future-proof our home and services for vulnerable adults over many years to come.

In addition to looking after our historic building, we will upgrade our internal and external systems to provide the safest home, and will make sustainable choices where possible. Due to the risks associated with complex epilepsy, the use of modern technologies will reduce the risk to life, and provide peace of mind to staff and relatives who look after our vulnerable residents.

Help us care for our future

The total cost of The Meath Capital Appeal is £1.1m. Your donation will make a huge difference to us as we future-proof our services.

In the event that we raise more than the required amount, the surplus will be used by The Meath for general charitable activities.

Sponsor a Roof Tile!

Each tile will enable us to repair the historic roof of our home ensuring the long term preservation of our beautiful Grade II building. We are using reclaimed, handmade clay roof tiles installed by specialist contractors on which you can write a message of support!

Suggested donation is £15 per tile, please send your message to fundraising@meath.org.uk and we will write it for you! Please visit https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/meath-roof-tile to make your donation.
