Story

The Big Wroe/Midha challenge aims to raise funds to help the Swansea City Foundation send a 'Team Wales' to the Street Child World Cup which takes place in the USA in 2026. We are aiming to run, walk, cycle, swim (and hop!) the equivalent of the distance between Swansea.com stadium and The White House in Washington DC - 5641km in just 2 months, between 15 February - 15 April, a tough challenge, but we're determined to do it!

We’re aiming to raise £5641 to support the Swans Foundation and Street Child United, a huge target, but it’s a really worthwhile cause. It transforms the lives of street-connected children, not only those who participate, but also those they inspire on their return home.

The Wroe/Midha family have their roots in Swansea and many of us have been lifelong Swansea City fans. We are thrilled that the Foundation will be selecting a team from the Swansea area who will be joining an additional 24 countries from across the globe in competing. This is particularly special for us as a family as this is where Dr Raj Midha set up his first General Practice in 1960 (Blaen-y-Maes) until his untimely death in 1983. He would have been 100 years old this year.

SCU is a global movement that uses the power of sport, art, and advocacy to challenge the stigma faced by street-connected children and fight for their rights.

The charity shines a spotlight on children living in street situations, the adversities they face and the fundamental rights they lack. SCU advocate for core demands including identity, protection from violence, gender equality and access to education.

Ahead of each FIFA World Cup, SCU connects street children from across the world to play football, take part in a festival of arts, and participate in child-friendly Congress sessions, all designed to empower and champion their rights.

"We’re extremely excited to be involved in such an incredible opportunity," said Beth Robinson, targeted interventions manager at Swansea City AFC Foundation.

"This will be a once in a lifetime experience for young people and the impact will extend far beyond the tournament."

"The Street Child World Cup is a shining example of how football can be used as a tool to engage, educate and empower young people, which is something we constantly strive to do as a Foundation."
