The Empty Seat

When no one listens, they disappear. 4 in 10 people waiting for mental health support received no help while they waited. Silence has consequences. Lamp stands between silence and support, help us ensure fewer seats stay empty.

Mental Health is complex. Our advocacy work involves, listening, guiding, planning, supporting and ensuring their needs are properly considered. Mental Health cannot be ‘cured’ with one conversation, it takes time to form trust. Our advocates devote hours, days, months to provide the best support.

Story

The Empty Seat

When no one listens, they disappear.

There is an empty seat in a stadium. There is an empty chair in an office. There is an empty place at the table. Most people walk past without noticing, but empty seats tell a story.

Across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, people are waiting for mental health support and receiving none. Recent data shows that 4 in 10 people waiting for help received no support while they waited. Silence has consequences.

Disappearance is not always dramatic. It is often gradual and quiet. People begin to withdraw. They stop attending work. They cancel plans with friends. They disengage from services. They lose confidence. In some cases, they disappear completely.

“I felt invisible. I stopped asking for help because it felt like no one was listening.”

The empty seat represents someone who has not been listened to, heard, seen or empowered. It represents someone who should still be there.

Listening Changes Outcomes

Lamp is a community mental health advocacy charity. Lamp does not replace clinical services, but stands alongside people when systems feel overwhelming and confusing. Advocacy means someone listens properly. It means someone explains rights and options. It means someone ensures a person’s voice is heard when decisions are being made.

“Lamp helped me feel visible again. They made sure I was heard.”

Lamp stands between silence and support.
