The LJS Drop-In for Asylum-Seeking Families provides warmth, dignity, and essential support to families navigating the UK asylum system. Once a month, we welcome 75–85 families to the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, offering £45 in cash—the only drop-in in London providing regular cash support—alongside a hot vegetarian meal, nappies, toiletries, seasonal clothing, shoes, a supervised play space for children, referrals, and a space of welcome. Founded in 2014, the Drop-In has grown into a vibrant, interfaith and intergenerational effort powered by over 200 volunteers, around 60% of whom come from outside the synagogue and many returning guests. Together, they prepare meals, run our stations, offer childcare, and ensure guests feel respected and cared for. Families also receive referrals to baby banks and local services for additional help. Rooted in the Jewish value of tikkun olam—repairing the world—we strive to create a space of welcome and solidarity in the face of the UK’s increasingly hostile asylum system. Your donation helps sustain this vital lifeline, ensuring families feel seen, supported, and safe every month.

Story

As many of you may know, Asylum seekers in the UK are not allowed to work while awaiting a decision on their refugee claims, and most of our guests live in temporary hotel accommodation and receive just £7 per week from the Home Office. This is nowhere near enough to survive—especially in London—and leaves families financially vulnerable, socially isolated, and excluded from integrating into wider society, all the while struggling with common PTSD and trauma from their journey to the UK and from the homes and family they have had to leave behind.

Based on the principle 'Tikkun Olam' (repair the earth), we aim to ease the hardship experienced by families navigating the asylum process.

At our Drop-In, each family receives a warm meal, a small cash grant, travel reimbursement, nappies, shoes, school uniforms, clothes, toiletries, legal and baby bank referrals, and a children’s play area. For two hours each month, our guests experience something too often denied to them: a safe, welcoming space where they can rest, connect, and be treated with dignity.

“It feels like I am coming to my parents’ home!” - Guest of one year

Today, we support 154 registered families

Our Families come from over thirty different countries, and we have 251 children registered. We have 35 more families on our waiting list who we cannot currently invite due to a lack of resources. It is a testament to the strength of the community we’ve built together that many of our guests, who eventually obtain leave to remain, return as volunteers themselves.

Why we need your support

Recently, we lost one of our key fundraisers, and we are struggling.

Unfortunately, we only have enough funds to continue running until December 2025. It is no celebration that the need for our services continues, but the current state of the asylum system makes it evident that so many of our families rely on our support every month.

Your donation will support our families through cash and travel reimbursements, as well as the purchase of food, nappies, toiletries, other essential items, and keeping our space open.

Thank you for considering donating to our valuable project, and feel free to view our website for further information and read our annual report: https://ljsasylumdropin.org/
