Story
Our Glasshouses Project
Our wonderful glasshouses at Beyond The Wall have come to the end of their lives and are now in a dilapidated state. Due to the age of the structures and the increasingly extreme weather conditions we are experiencing, significant parts of the glasshouses have naturally deteriorated. Persistent wind and rain have caused ongoing damage to glass and timber, making them increasingly difficult and costly to maintain.
These glasshouses are not only a beautiful and important part of the historic Victorian walled garden, but they also provide vital functional spaces for our day provision for adults with additional needs, including essential growing areas and our much-loved Tearoom.
Planning Permission Granted
We are pleased to share that we now have planning permission to replace the existing glasshouses with modern aluminium structures. This is a hugely positive step forward for the charity. Aluminium glasshouses will be far more durable, require significantly less maintenance, and are designed to last for many decades.
Thanks to advances in modern glazing and environmental technology, the new glasshouses will allow year-round use. This means our members will be able to access these spaces in all seasons, improving comfort, accessibility, and opportunities for growing, learning, and therapeutic activity throughout the year.
We will ensure that the approved designs are sensitive to the historic setting and preserve the integrity and character of the walled garden, while also meeting the long-term needs of our charity.
Why This Matters
The glasshouses are central to Beyond The Wall’s future. They provide essential growing space, support our horticultural activities, and house our Tearoom, which generates vital income that helps sustain our services. Replacing the glasshouses with a long-term, sustainable solution ensures that these spaces remain safe, usable, and financially viable for generations to come.
This will be our biggest campaign to date, and we need your help more than ever. We are hoping to raise £1 million through generous public donations and major grant funding. It is a huge project for our charity, and we are incredibly grateful for any support you are able to give.
