Mission Rabies

Urgent Malawi Appeal

We urgently need to raise funds to protect over 80,000 children in Thyolo district, Malawi. Located just outside our existing project, where child deaths from rabies have been all but eliminated, this community desperately needs protection.

Story

Imagine fearing a dog as much as you would fear a lion.

Imagine living with the constant worry that your child will be bitten, and that if they show symptoms of rabies it's too late to save them.

No-one should live with these fears, but in Malawi over 480 children die every year from rabies - devastating families and the wider community.

But it doesn't need to be this way...

Mission Rabies have been working in the worst-affected areas of Malawi since 2015. In our project areas, we've all but eliminated child deaths from this horrific disease. We've done this through the targeted vaccination of dogs and dedicated kids education programmes.

Now, our expert teams on the ground in Malawi have identified an urgent need to rapidly expand our Blantyre project to the south, into Thyolo district. The district has over 80,000 children of primary school age who are facing the constant threat of being bitten by a rabid dog.

Be part of the solution

With your help we can deliver an immediate and life-saving vaccination drive in October, but we need £10,000 to help fund this work.

This £10,000 will vaccinate up to 5,000 dogs, instantly reducing the risk of rabies spreading or a child being bitten by a rabid dog. Alongside this, our teacher training programme will ultimately deliver life-saving learning to over 80,000 primary school children.

Our specialist teams are on the ground in Malawi right now, please donate today to enable them to protect the community in Thyolo district. Thank you.

The heartbreaking impact of rabies

One morning, Emma asked her son, Joseph, why he did not want go to school that day. He told her he had a bad headache and could not drink water or eat food. Later, he began to vomit and foam at the mouth. This is her story.

Rabies needlessly kills 59,000 people each year. This needs to change. Following World Health Organisation guidelines we run mass canine vaccination drives and lifesaving education programmes to help people protect themselves against rabies. What we are doing works, but we can't do it alone.
