Story
Conditions have been extremely difficult in Myanmar over the last four years, first with the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and then with the aftermath of the military coup in February 2021 when the junta seized power from the democratically elected party. The coup, widely condemned by Burmese citizens and the international community, led to widespread protests and consequent violent political repression by the military. This has had severe impact on an already fragile healthcare system.
The families of children with cancer are in need of support to be able to keep their children in treatment. With such poor resourcing of health services, families of children with cancer face out-of-pocket expenses to fund the costs of cancer treatment. With the steep economic decline, their ability to afford these expenses is further limited. Those who are the most impoverished, and those living far from one of the only two hospitals in the country that treat childhood cancer are the most disadvantaged.
Added Earthquake Impact
The large March 2025 earthquakes levelled buildings and badly damaged health infrastructure across central Myanmar, with thousands killed and injured and multiple hospitals destroyed or rendered unusable. Health facilities are overwhelmed, medical supplies are critically short, and hundreds of thousands have lost access to life-saving health care. The Children with cancer in Myanmar need your support now more than ever.
Stitches of Support
Three years ago, our Finance Manager, Nweni, conducted training for caregivers in crochet, macramé, and other handicrafts. The products created through this initiative have since been sold every Saturday at pop-up markets in the Shangrila Apartment complex in Yangon. The funds raised are used to support for the treatment of children with cancer at Yangon Children's Hospital.
