Story

Safer Journeys, Brighter Futures

This holiday season, make journeys safer and more accessible across sub-Saharan Africa, helping build a brighter future for all with Transaid.

- Every year, 1.19 million people are killed in road crashes worldwide – the leading cause of death for young people aged 5–29.

- Nearly every minute, a child under five dies of malaria. In 2023, 95% of global malaria deaths occurred in the WHO African Region.

- A maternal death occurred almost every two minutes in 2020.

Transaid and our partners are working hard to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by 2030: to halve road traffic deaths, end the epidemic of malaria, and reduce the maternal mortality rate.

We believe that everyone has the right to travel safely without the fear that they may not come home because of a lack of training, or dangerous vehicles and roads.

Everyone has the right to access to healthcare.

Every person should have the opportunity to build the skills they need to transform their future.

Your support helps make journeys safer and more accessible for families like Grace Kalunga and her children. It was past midnight in Makolongo, Serenje District, Zambia, when Grace Kalunga noticed that her daughter Comfort Chola had a high temperature.

They used the community bicycle ambulance to take Comfort to the health facility, which is located 17km from their home – a distance that would take over three hours on foot. The journey to the health facility using the bicycle ambulance took just over an hour, where Comfort received injectable artesunate and recovered. Grace says:

Most of the children you see here, are here because of this very bicycle ambulance.

Our partner-led approach to improving road safety focuses on promoting safe driver behaviour and advocating for quality truck, bus and motorcycle training with long term programmes in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Over the past year, Transaid and our partners trained more than 9,000 drivers and riders.

In Kenya, 700 drivers received eye tests in Kenya, with 361 glasses provided. Read Fani Evans’ story here.

Now with these glasses, I can check the documents myself. That has more security.

A gift of £3 could fund a high-visibility vest for a driver in Ghana.

£10 could fund an eye test and glasses for a driver in Kenya.

£30 could help fund a community food bank in Zambia.

£125 could fund a bicycle for a Community Health Volunteer in Zambia.

With your help, we can make journeys safer for brighter futures. See here for more information on our programmes.
