Trees - restoring Alderney's historic woodlands

Coming together as a community to restore Alderney's ancient wildlife rich woodland for future generations.

Alderney Wildlife Trust is one of 46 UK Wildlife Trusts. We manage over 130 hectares of land for wildlife & over 20km of footpath to ensure public access to our sites. We work with the local community to engage them with the natural environment to help us protect Alderney's wildlife for the future.

Story

Community taking action to restore its historic woodland

The ancient woodland that connected the Channel Islands over thousands of years has now been almost entirely lost from Alderney, with the devistation of the German occupation during WWII destroying much of the pockets that still remained.

As a community Alderney is coming together to restore the ancient mix of native trees over a significant area of the island. Working with the support of local land owners we will help to improve and expand the largely no native and wildlife poor woodland which currently exists and re-plant sites now covered in scrub and bramble with the native tree species that once thrived there.
