Revive the Tryavna Art School

Campaign by Little Bulgaria UK

After a 2025 fire, the Tryavna Art School lost its roof, studios and equipment. A century-old hub for icon painting and woodcarving, it kept teaching. Help restore workshops and a new roof with a donation

Story

The National High School of Applied Arts “Tryavna Art School” has been left without a roof and without equipment—but not without spirit. A school that keeps one of Bulgaria’s most precious cultural heritages alive needs our help—now.

On April 4, 2025, in the early hours of the night, a fire broke out that consumed the roof and several of the school’s specialized studios. The school lost critical equipment, teaching facilities, and the spaces where generations of artists have trained in woodcarving, icon painting, and interior design.

Founded in 1920 by decree of Tsar Boris III, the high school continues the tradition of the Tryavna artistic school—the cradle of masters such as Usta Gencho, Papa Vitan, and the woodcarvers Oshanetsa and Buchkuvetsa. Young talents from across the country study here in icon painting, artistic woodcarving, and interior design—disciplines that unite spirituality, history, and aesthetics. The school is part of the Ministry of Culture’s system and, since 2015, has been affiliated with UNESCO, recognized as a national cultural institute.

“We may not have a roof, but our spirit hasn’t burned out.” — Orfey Mindov, School Director

Despite the destruction, students and teachers did not interrupt their education for a single day. They adapted quickly—lectures were held in another school, and practical classes in the surviving workshops. The old “mutual-instruction” method even returned temporarily, with advanced students mentoring younger ones in shared studios. Instead of chaos, there was a revival of the spirit of community and craft.

🛠 The school needs support now.

After the fire, the school lost not only its roof but a vital part of its material base.

Specialized studios and modern equipment—including 3D printers—and the spaces for practical classes in woodcarving and icon painting were destroyed.

To continue full-fledged training, at least 80,000 BGN is needed for new equipment, complete replacement of the roof structure, and urgent building repairs.

Recovery cannot happen without the support of donors, cultural organizations, and partners who value the Tryavna School’s spiritual and material heritage.
